Leg Ulcers

We take health care personally because true excellence goes beyond medicine and machines. It lives in the moments when quality of life improves, when pain eases, and when a wound finally closes. Those moments matter. They remind us why we care, why we persist, and why healing will always be a source of joy to us as well as out clients.

Clinician assessing a patient’s lower leg and ankle

Leg ulcers are open wounds on the lower leg or ankle that fail to heal within the expected timeframe, usually because of underlying venous or arterial disease. Around eight in ten are venous in origin, caused by valves in the leg veins allowing blood to pool and raise pressure in the skin. Accurate diagnosis is essential, because venous and arterial ulcers require very different treatment.

What this service involves

  • Full lower-limb assessment including Doppler and ankle-brachial pressure index

  • Identification of the underlying cause: venous, arterial, diabetic or mixed

  • Wound bed preparation, cleansing and appropriate dressing selection

  • Graduated compression therapy where arterial supply allows

  • Skin care, oedema control and management of surrounding eczema

  • Recurrence prevention with hosiery and long-term follow-up

Who it is for

Anyone with a wound on the leg or ankle that has not healed within two weeks, or a recurring ulcer at a previously healed site. Also suitable for patients with varicose veins, leg swelling, skin discolouration or a history of deep vein thrombosis.

What to expect

Most venous ulcers improve steadily once effective compression is in place, with healing typically measured over weeks rather than days. We review progress regularly, adjust the treatment plan as the wound changes, and put a prevention plan in place once the ulcer has closed.
