Delayed Wound Healing

We take health care personally because true excellence goes beyond medicine and machines. It lives in the moments when quality of life improves, when pain eases, and when a wound finally closes. Those moments matter. They remind us why we care, why we persist, and why healing will always be a source of joy to us as well as out clients.

New and acute wounds progress to healing naturally. However, wounds can become static and take longer than expected to improve, remain unchanged or repeatedly deteriorate. This is known as delayed or chronic wound healing.

Without appropriate assessment and treatment, a delayed wound may become chronic, cause increasing discomfort and significantly affect a person’s mobility, independence, confidence and quality of life.

There are many reasons why a wound may not heal as expected. These can include poor circulation, infection, persistent pressure, repeated trauma, swelling, diabetes, reduced mobility, inadequate nutrition or dehydration.

Certain medications and underlying health conditions may also interfere with the body’s ability to repair damaged tissue.

Sometimes the dressing being used is no longer suitable because the wound has changed, the level of exudate has increased or the surrounding skin has become damaged but the same dressing is being consistently applied.

Successful wound management requires more than simply choosing a dressing. We believe that assessment should not only consider wound but should consider primarily the quality of life that will affect the wound if it is not there.

Early specialist assessment can help identify the factors preventing healing and reduce the risk of further deterioration.

At Wound Care Consultants Ltd, we provide very experienced, independent wound assessment and practical advice tailored to the needs of each individual. Our aim is to identify why a wound is not progressing, support effective clinical decision-making and develop a clear, evidence-informed treatment plan and increase your quality of life.

If you are concerned that your wound, or the wound of someone you care for, is not healing as expected, please contact us to discuss how we may be able to help. Urgent medical advice should be sought if there is rapidly increasing redness or swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading infection, significant bleeding or sudden deterioration.
