Vacuum therapy, also known as negative pressure wound therapy, applies gentle controlled suction to a sealed dressing over the wound. It removes excess fluid, reduces swelling, draws the wound edges together and stimulates the growth of healthy new tissue.
What this service involves
Assessment of suitability, including bleeding risk and wound type
Application of foam or gauze filler with an airtight sealed dressing
Continuous or intermittent negative pressure tailored to the wound
Portable pumps so treatment can continue during normal daily life
Scheduled dressing changes, usually two to three times per week
Monitoring of exudate volume, wound dimensions and tissue quality
Who it is for
Patients with deep cavity wounds, dehisced surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, heavily exuding wounds, and wounds being prepared for surgical closure or grafting.
What to expect
Many wounds show measurable reduction in depth and exudate within the first two weeks. Therapy continues until the cavity is shallow enough for conventional dressings or closure, and we review the plan at each dressing change.
