A dehisced wound is a surgical incision that has partially or fully reopened during healing. It may follow infection, excess tension on the wound edges, haematoma or delayed healing, and can be alarming for patients who expected a straightforward recovery.

Prompt assessment of wound depth, cavity size and signs of infection
Swabbing and referral for antibiotics where infection is suspected
Cavity packing and dressings that support healing from the base upward
Negative pressure wound therapy for larger or heavily exuding cavities
Liaison with your surgical team so care stays joined up
Scar and skin care once the wound has closed
Who it is for
Patients whose surgical wound has opened, is leaking, or is not closing as expected after any procedure, including abdominal, orthopaedic, breast and vascular surgery.
What to expect
Reopened wounds usually heal by secondary intention, gradually filling from the base. We measure the wound at each visit so you can see clear progress, and adjust the dressing regime as the cavity reduces.
